Appointments to outside bodies
Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Development – Development Management, Planning Policy & Economic Development, Transport, Building Control, Parking & Projects and major projects.
I moved with my family to the Watford area as a child in the 1970s, having previously lived in Kincardineshire, Scotland.
I was first elected as councillor for Oxhey ward in 1991. My activity as a ward councillor has involved, among other things, campaigning successfully to save the fast train service at Bushey Station, to retain Attenborough's Fields as public open space, supporting the designation of two conservation areas in the ward, and promoting improvements to Oxhey's various parks and open spaces.
At a borough level, I serve in Mayor Peter Taylor's cabinet with responsibility for Regeneration and Development. At a time when Watford is facing unprecedented pressure from the government to deliver more housing, my main challenge is to balance the need for new homes, jobs and a thriving town with protecting the environment and quality of life for local people.
My wife Dorothy was Elected Mayor of Watford from 2002-18 and before that a fellow Oxhey councillor. I have two grown-up stepchildren. Outside politics, I work as a university administrator and enjoy reading (and occasionally writing) about history - mainly the 19th and 20th centuries.
